Wisdom Teeth

at Desert
Maxillofacial

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars,
are the last set of teeth to erupt in the mouth.
While the average adult is designed to accommodate
28 teeth, many of us develop up to 32 teeth.

This discrepancy means that wisdom teeth often
struggle to find proper space, leading to a host of
potential complications.

Why Wisdom Teeth Removal
May Be Necessary

Wisdom teeth should ideally emerge fully and in proper alignment, but this rarely happens.
When they become impacted, growing sideways, partially erupting, or remaining trapped
beneath the gum and bone, they can cause several issues:

icon element

Infection Risk

Partially erupted wisdom teeth can create an opening that allows bacteria to enter, resulting in infection, swelling, and pain.

icon element

Misalignment of Teeth

The pressure from impacted teeth can shift adjacent teeth, disrupting both orthodontic work and natural alignment.

Formation of Cysts or Tumors

In severe cases, cysts or tumors may develop around impacted wisdom teeth, potentially leading to the destruction of the jawbone and nearby healthy teeth.

Early removal is generally recommended to prevent these complications and to reduce the
surgical risks associated with later procedures.

Oral Examination and Early
Evaluation

An oral examination, accompanied by x-rays, is essential for evaluating the position of your wisdom teeth. Dr. Jugan uses advanced imaging techniques to determine if your wisdom teeth are impacted on or likely to cause future problems.

Early evaluation, often during the mid-teenage years by your dentist, orthodontist, or an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, can lead to better outcomes and fewer complications down the road.

The Procedure

  • Surgical Removal
Wisdom teeth extraction is a precise procedure that involves making an incision in the gum tissue, removing the tooth (and sometimes bone around it), and then suturing the site.
  • Post-Operative Care
After the extraction, you will bite down on gauze to help control bleeding. You will be monitored in the office until you are ready to go home.
  • Recovery
Upon discharge, you will receive a postoperative kit containing detailed care instructions, a prescription for pain medication and antibiotics, and a follow-up appointment scheduled in one week to assess your healing progress.
